When it was new in 2005, this Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG Kompressor was merely a traditional G-Wagon with a hand-built, supercharged AMG 5.5-liter V8 under the hood, a boxy body, and a rigid frame that only those that scoot around L.A.'s smooth streets could love.

But then someone (read: not the current owner) had an idea.: 6x6 it. So, Squared Customs did.

The now six-wheeled utility vehicle has an extensive list of modifications. Its exterior is finished in a Designo Magno Matte Gray paint job and accented by carbon fiber fenders, snorkel, and hood scoop. There's also full differential locks, portal axles, forged wheels, and fresh exterior lighting. The bed is made of composite decking.

The ute's dimensions match a traditional 6x6 from the manufacturer.

The original engine, which produces 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and five-speed automatic transmission have not been altered. It also has its original Brabus bi-xenon black headlights.

The upgraded interior features black quilted leather upholstery and carbon fiber trim. It also has a 5.0-inch infotainment touch screen, navigation, a Harman/Kardon premium audio system, power-adjustable front and rear seats with memory, heated front and rear seats, automatic climate control, a multi-function steering wheel, and SmartKey.

The model is currently up for sale on Cars & Bids. With six days left in the auction, the bids are up to $47,000 at the time of publication.

The seller, out of Deerfield Beach, Florida, reports that despite its 15-year age, the ute only has 97,800 miles on the odometer. It comes with two keys and an owners manual.

New book showcases the specs of a Hollywood favorite, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen

Publications

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has been driven by everybody from Queen Rania of Jordan to Kylie Jenner and Ranbir Kapoor to Arnold Schwarzenegger. A new book from celebrated automotive author Nicholas Greene guides readers through the history of the vehicle, including several less star studded parts from engine specs to model changes.

"Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen" by Nicholas Greene is an Essential Buyer's Guide celebrates the boxy model, which set out to be Stuttgart's answer to the Range Rover. The model was codenamed W460 during development after the Shah of Iran proposed such a vehicle for non-military use- he was a large Mercedes shareholder at the time.

That was 1972. By 1973, the first G-Class wooden prototype was presented to Daimler-Benz management and the following year the first drivable prototype began testing in German coalfields, the Sahara Desert, and the Arctic Circle. From the start, the 4x4 was meant to be a terrain conquerer - something its engineers still prides themselves on it being today.

The W460 was introduced to the press in 1979. These models never made it to U.S. shores via a dealership. It wasn't until an importer in New Mexico, Europa International, Inc., began buying, certifying, and modifying the G-Class for the US market in the early 90s that the first models graced America's roads.

Virtually ignoring the U.S. market didn't bother the Germans. They were too busy making a long list of varieties of the G-Wagen. They had models with engines from four to twelve cylinders. They were supercharged, turbocharged, twin-turbocharged, and naturally aspirated. There were as many as 22 paint color options from the manufacturer. Special editions ran rampant through the lineup.

"Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen" helps owners and buyers sort through it all, including issues that you may come across when looking to buy a G-Class, the market value of the vehicles, and the cost of spare parts.

Greene would know. He's a frequent contributor to classic car and club magazines in the U.K. and France, and a restorer of many Mercedes vehicles including a W126 S-Class 560SE and G-Wagen.

The 96-page book features 107 photographs and is available now, priced at £13.99(UK), $25.00(US),and 32.99(CAN). It's also available here on Amazon.

Invicto Mission is the badass Brabus answer to the common G-Wagon

New Model News

It's the definition of luxury; just a different looking definition than is usually talked about. The Barbus Automotive Invicto Mission is a unique, well-equipped, and priced higher than many houses in the U.S.

The model is based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Glass. Its shelter cell exterior meets original equipment manufacturer (OEM) factoring armoring standards. Its hot formed steel plates combine with 3D-printed protection parts to give the SUV a VR6 ballistic protection level. It has additionally fortified side blast protection, which Brabus says is, "at the level of a luxury state limousine."

Brabus has used new technology to advance the worthiness of the model. In their own words:

"One of the structural features of the shelter cell is the zero-joints design which means that there is absolutely no entry narrowing – similar to a vehicle armour plated in an OEM factory. The armour components are mounted to the shelter cell without any gaps. Unavoidable weld seams, on the doors for example, are achieved with material overlapping and so-called labyrinths. The design of the upper windscreen frame is also innovative."

"For the first time anywhere in the world, we're using protective elements here, which are produced in an additive manufacturing process in a 3D printer. We're definitely the first to do it," said Christian Draser, CEO, Brabus Automotive.

The Invicto Mission is built for, you guessed it, missions. It has been designed to take on the challenge of travel in challenging situations. Despite its rugged exterior, the car has a sophisticated interior that has been upgraded to accommodate the personnel that ride in the SUV and outfits they typically wear. For instance, the seats are compatible with protection vests thanks to variable foam geometry.

Brabus has equipped the SUV with a "MOLLE"-system door panels and seat backs, a roof rail system, a digital rear display mirror, the Acetech system with two touch control panels, an intercom system, and 20-inch rough profile off-road tires.

While made for special forces, the average consumer (with a large sum in their bank account) can opt for one of three different lines of options and accessories for when they use the Invicto as a daily driver. Options include lightning and signal systems, auxiliary roof lights, a fire extinguishing system, an IR package including a night vision device, a fresh air system with ABC filter, and an escape hatch

The armoring adds about 1,000 kg to the weight of the vehicle. Brabus modified the SUV's chassis to meet the driving dynamics and life span the up fitter expects from its vehicles. Additional underpinnings have been upgraded to increase strength.

Pricing? If you have to ask, you're probably not their target market. A regular G-Wagon starts at $130,900 and the 2020 AMG G 63 starts at $156,450. It's likely that the uplifting will nearly double that price tag.

Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cigarette Edition pays homage to longstanding boat racing partnership

Special Edition

The Miami International Boat Show is upon us and among the Honda-powered pontoons and sleek cigarette boats is a one-of-a-kind Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cigarette Edition that is paired with a 59-foot Tirranna AMG Edition boat. AMG Performance Studio in Affalterbach gave the G63 the same design principles as the boat.

"Mercedes-AMG stands for Performance Luxury. The Tirranna AMG Edition is the perfect transfer of this principle to a boat: Its dynamic and at the same time deeply sensual proportions embody athletic beauty. In its powerful, clean look, the boldness of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 can be experienced," said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG.

The latest in a highly exclusive line of special edition boats, the 59' Tirranna AMG Edition sets new standards in terms of performance and design, striking the perfect balance between a luxury yacht and a performance- oriented super console. Despite its 59' length and 14' beam, the Tirranna AMG Edition is extremely agile and optimized for high performance.

When designing their new performance flagship, the Cigarette Racing Team engineers focused their attention on every detail, for example by utilizing lightweight construction in key locations: Its raked hardtop is made completely of carbon fiber, reducing the vertical center of gravity for better handling, while carbon fiber also features throughout its superstructure, with carbon-capped stringers and a carbon-fiber transom. The hull and deck are vacuum infused using a highly optimized composite laminate schedule with PVC coring. The instrument panel is a nano-coated solid surface that is anti-reflective and heat-resistant, which also features titanium fasteners.

The striking design of the 59' Tirranna AMG Edition as well as the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cigarette Edition is the result of close collaboration between the Cigarette Racing Team, the Mercedes-AMG design team and Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG.

While the boat shines on the water, the G 63 shines on land. It has exclusive design finishes and special detailing, which can only be found on this specific model. The all-wheel drive SUV is powered by a 577 horsepower 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine and has been hand crafted specially to celebrate the debut of the new boat.

"Since 2007, we've shared our passion for performance with the Cigarette Racing Team. For the first time ever we followed a holistic design approach for both – the car and the boat," said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cigarette Edition is even more individualized than any other car before within our successful cooperation. The exterior and interior of this one of a kind G-Class Edition was tailor-made in our Performance Studio in Affalterbach underlining the high-performance appearance of the Mercedes-AMG G 63."

Starting with a black metallic exterior, designers added a unique golden designed AMG diamond pattern. It rides on new 22-inch Mercedes-AMG cross- spoke forged wheels are highlighted with gold accents at the wheel center caps and at the rim flange. It also has AMG Night Package elements, a dark chrome AMG specific radiator grille and bulbar, side entry boards in matte black, and glossy black vehicle logos.

The model's interior is upholstered in macchiato beige and dark blue two-tone exclusive nappa leather. Its AMG performance steering wheel is carbon fiber with dark blue nappa leather. These two sets of design choices echo those found in the boat. The SUV has unique floor mats and the iconic G-Class grab handle with distinctive Cigarette lettering.

Nissan is nearing the release of the Ariya, its first new EV in several years. Even so, the brand hasn't forgotten about its first mass-market EV, the Leaf. Today, Nissan announced pricing for the Leaf, which starts at just under $29,000.

2022 Nissan Altima: Three things to know

Comfortable midsize sedan

The Nissan Altima may not get the attention or the praise that the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord get, but it's a solid entry in an ultra-competitive segment. It's also one of few options in its class with available all-wheel drive. We spent a week with the 2022 Nissan Altima SR Midnight Edition with AWD and came away from the experience impressed. Here are three things to know about the car.

The 2022 Nissan Altima is a Good Value

With a starting price in the mid-$20,000 range and available all-wheel drive, it's hard to complain about value here. The Altima is still reasonably priced at the top end, where it maxes out at around $35,000 before options and fees. That's a great value for a spacious, comfortable car like the Altima, and with all-wheel drive it's a great all-weather commuter.

2022 Altima Interior Space and Comfort are Generous

It's easy to ignore Nissan's Zero Gravity seats as another marketing buzzword, but they are legitimately comfortable and supportive in a way that not many others are. Available leather upholstery and contrast stitching give the interior an upscale feel, but even lower trims' cloth upholstery feels nice and works well from a visual standpoint. Up front, there's room for both passengers to stretch out, and the driver won't feel cramped on leg or headroom. Back-seat passengers get a similar treatment, as there's plenty of space for adults and kids. Parents will find an easy time loading and unloading car seats as well.

The 2023 Nissan Altima Gets an Update

Nissan is refreshing the Altima for 2023 with a facelift, new tech, and better safety features. The new car will go on sale in the fall of 2022 and will come in several trims, including one with Nissan's truck VC-Turbo engine. The Altima's most noticeable update will be its front fascia, which is all-new for 2023. Nissan gives the car a fresh grille design that varies depending on the trim, and LED headlights will be standard. Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard, and the Altima is available with all-wheel drive, ProPilot Assist, and more.
