Three of our favorite three-row SUVs for 2022

Family-friendly three-row SUVs

Jeep

There are more three-row SUVs on sale than ever before, so it can be tough to make a choice between them. You need to balance space, performance, safety, and tech to make your decision, and doing your homework is important. To help you get started down the right path, we've selected three of our favorite three-row family haulers. These are SUVs that bring the latest features and excellent design features to help keep you and your family rolling. Let's get started.

2023 Toyota SequoiaThe Sequoia is all-new for the 2023 model year, and finally stands on level ground with its rivals.Toyota

Toyota Sequoia

Toyota gave the Sequoia a much-needed overhaul for the 2023 model year that brought it up to speed with its competitors. The thirsty V8 and outdated styling are gone, and in their place, Toyota installed a twin-turbo V6 with a hybrid system that produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. A ten-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive are available.

The Sequoia’s update brought a new infotainment system with a much more intuitive, fluid interface. It runs on a standard 8-inch or an optional 14-inch touchscreen. Toyota’s new software offers voice controls, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and much more.

Inside, the Sequioa’s interior feels much more upscale and modern than before, and there’s plenty of room for the entire family and all their gear across its three spacious rows. Starting with the Limited trim, Toyota gives luxurious standard features, including heated and ventilated front seats, a larger touchscreen, a hands-free liftgate, and a heated steering wheel.

2023 Kia TellurideKia updated the ultra-popular Telluride for 2023 with refreshed styling and features.Kia

Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is easily one of the best family vehicles from the last ten years, and it offers great value on top of its functional characteristics. Kia updated the SUV for 2022 with a new 10.25-inch infotainment system and a highway driving assistance system.

The Telluride comes with a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. The SUV’s engine may not be the most powerful or thrilling, but it gets the job done and offers refined, smooth operation.

Kia equips the base Telluride with seating for eight, but the optional second-row captain’s chairs reduce capacity to seven. Interior fit and finish, materials, and styling are all far more upscale than the Telluride’s price tag would suggest, making the SUV an excellent family companion for longer road trips.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee LThe Grand Cherokee got a third row for the first time with the new L.Jeep

Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep completely overhauled the Grand Cherokee for 2021 and added a new three-row “L” model shortly after. The new Grand Cherokee L features boxy, muscular styling that works with its stretched profile. Even with a new shape, the SUV is immediately recognizable as a Grand Cherokee.

Jeep offers two engines in the 2022 Grand Cherokee L. The base mill is a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is available that produces 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the V8 comes standard with four-wheel drive.

The L is more premium inside than most likely expect from a Jeep, but at the top end of the model line it’s deep into luxury territory, both on price and design. The Jeep is just shy of its competitors on interior space, but there’s still plenty of room for up to seven people. Top trims get luxury finishes like leather and woodgrain, and available tech like a rear-seat entertainment system helps keep everyone happy for the long haul.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: An icon, redesigned

All-new off-road SUV

Moab was once a sleepy western mining town. Today, it’s an increasingly-popular destination in an ever-growing region known for three things: its dramatic scenery beset by red-rock canyons, buttes and mesas, with stretches of wide-open backcountry and nearby national parks; for the hundreds of miles of off-road trails in the surrounding locale; and for the annual Moab Jeep Safari aka Easter Jeep Safari. Of note: not so long ago, four wheeling was sometimes called “jeeping” and many off-road vehicles of many different types were affectionately called “jeeps”, hence the name of this renowned event.

2022 Jeep Grand CherokeeSeveral trims and configurations are available.Jeep/Stellantis

It’s no surprise that Jeep, now a brand of Stellantis, has used this area with the ‘Jeep moniker’ for a number of new vehicle introductions; after all, this event turns this small town in eastern Utah into something akin to a spring-break beach party with festivities and fanfare for thousands of 4WD enthusiasts, automotive aftermarket companies and vehicle manufacturers. Jeep recently brought a posse of automotive evaluators to Moab in a quieter season to test out its all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was an ideal location to sample some offerings in the updated lineup, motoring on two-lane paved roadways, along dirt tracks and over a technical stretch of 4WD trail with somewhat extreme rock climbs and sidehill slopes.

Spawned from the smaller Jeep Cherokee, the original “Grand” made its debut in 1992 at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit, as a ’93 model slotting into the luxury SUV segment with a unibody chassis, when many other sport utility purveyors used body-on-frame construction. The first-generation Grand Cherokee came in three trims with one powertrain--a 4.0 liter engine that made 190 horsepower that was shifted by a 4-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission, and was available in either rear-wheel drive (RWD/2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD).

Like Moab, the Grand Cherokee has grown up, changed in significant ways and appeals to an ever-growing audience. The fifth-generation version is Jeep’s global flagship and is not only more technologically-advanced with new styling inside and out, but also sports an all-new architecture, has more 4 x 4 capability, and is more luxury-laden than ever. Plus, there is a new electrified version, a new Trailhawk edition, 2 x 4 and 4 x 4 versions and three 4WD systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with some cutting edge-4WD technology. It’s powered by a choice of two engines: an all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is rated at 293 horsepower with 260 lb.-ft. of torque (assisted by an eTorque mild hybrid system), while a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 produces 357 /390; both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. (Overand and Summit versions powered by the V8 are offered with Jeep’s multiple displacement system). Gas-powered Grand Cherokees deliver fuel economy in a range between 17–21/14–19/22–26 mpg, depending on engine and drivetrain. The V-6 engine is rated for a towing capacity of up to 6,200 lbs. and an estimated class-leading driving range of more than 500 miles, while the V8 can tow up to 7,200 lbs.

The two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee comes in Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve trims. It starts at $37,785 and is on sale now. The three-row Grand Cherokee L went on sale in June 2021with a wheelbase that is 6.9 in. longer than the previous generation two-row model, and 5 in. longer than the newest two-row counterpart; it is available in four trims: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit. Available are eight-wheel options, with up to 21-inch diameter wheels offered for the first time.

The new 4xe propulsion system can be ordered on Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve model. It combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and gets the eight-speed automatic transmission. Overall, the 4xe system delivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Jeeps says the Grand Cherokee 4xe will get an estimated 25 miles (40 km) of all-electric range, returns approximately 57 MPGe and has a projected total range of more than 440 miles. It will go on sale in the spring of 2022.

2022 Jeep Grand CherokeeThe 2022 Grand Cherokee gets Stellantis' latest Uconnect 5 infotainment software. Jeep/Stellantis

Looking at the newest models, you’ll notice more aerodynamic and sculpted styling with a greater amount of glass. While there is some differentiation between trims, all get an upgraded posher look. The front fascia has been redesigned and the seven-slot grille reworked while the roofline and beltline are lowered and tapered.

Inside is a greater level of high-end craftmanship and added upscale materials and features. Top-of-the-line Summit Reserve gets a Palermo leather interior and a 950-watt, 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, with 19 custom-designed speakers (including a 10-inch subwoofer), 950-watts of power and a 17-channel amplifier, for example. Available 16-way adjustable front seats have power lumbar and memory, while higher specification versions offer new front driver and passenger seatback massage; heated/vented seats are available for first two rows, with three-level configurable controls. The center console has updated switches and added storage in the front bin that can accommodate two wireless devices and a wireless charger. Standard on all trims is an all-new premium, full-suite of customizable LED lighting with daytime/night-time settings; ambient lighting with a five-color selection is available on Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve models.

Updates to Uconnect 5 bring impressive new technology, including a 10.1-inch display, five-times-faster operating speed and over-the-air updates. Segment-exclusive is a 10.25-in. front passenger interactive display and 10.1-in. rear seat entertainment display with Amazon Fire TV built-in. The new model is not only larger but has been designed with more versatility; there is 144.6 cu. ft. of interior passenger volume (4.1 cu. ft. more) and 37.7 cu. ft. of cargo space, and the rear cargo area can hold a set of golf clubs transversely.

Now onboard are more than 110 advanced safety and security features, including Active Driving Assist with hands-on automated driving, and available 360-degree surround view and night vision cameras. (See list below.)

We sampled both engines and four different trims. Our takeaways: Both engines move the Grand Cherokee well and provide ample and always-available torque for everyday driving and high-speed passing. The V8 engine has alacrity plus a potent engine sound when the throttle is pushed. We were impressed by the handling of all that show smooth driving manners, deriving from the eight-speed transmission that provides crisp gear changes and on-the-fly shift-map changes based on different driver’s styles and different terrain; as well as from the widened track and the independent front and rear suspension set-ups.

2022 Jeep Grand CherokeeAdvanced 4WD systems are available. Jeep/Stellantis

Our favorite foray was motoring the new Trailhawk on a rigorous and noted off-road trail with rock shelf and rugged, uneven terrain. All three 4WD systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II) have a rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD) and are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by transferring torque to the wheel with the most grip; and, depending on trim, have Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system with five different terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand). The Trailhawk goes a tall step beyond: standard are all-terrain tires; integrated off-road camera; Quadra-Lift air suspension with up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance; improved approach, departure and breakover angles and the Quadra-Drive II active transfer case. We disengaged the class-exclusive sway bar disconnect that gave us improved articulation and traction over the roughest terrain and used Selec-Speed Control that manages vehicle speed in 4LO by automatically applying engine torque and/or brake pressure to maintain a consistent and safe speed without requiring the driver to control the throttle or the brake. Of note, the speed can be regulated by the driver.

Trailhawk is also differentiated by high-strength steel skid plates; red tow hooks; 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires; a glare-proof black-and-red matte “Trailhawk” hood decal (also on the Trailhawk 4xe). Jeep says this “Trail Rated, nature approved” model has class-leading traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and increased water fording capability of up to 24 inches.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe starts at $59,495

New plug-in hybrid SUV

Last year, Jeep electrified the Wrangler, its most iconic model, with an innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV). Not long after, the brand announced a similar version of the Grand Cherokee. The upscale electrified off-roader offers plenty of standard tech and features, solid safety equipment, and 25 miles of all-electric range. Today, Jeep announced pricing for the SUV, which will start arriving in dealers this spring.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xeThe 4xe powertrain delivers up to 25 miles of all electric range. Jeep/Stellantis

Pricing for the 4xe lineup starts at:

  • Grand Cherokee 4xe: $59,495
  • Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe: $64,280
  • Grand Cherokee Overland 4xe: $67,555
  • Grand Cherokee Summit 4xe: $71,615
  • Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe: $76,095
The Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with a turbocharged 2.0-,item inline-four that combines with two electric motors for a total output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The 4xe powertrain includes plug-in hybrid technology, which enables all-electric driving. In the Grand Cherokee, there's up to 25 miles of electric range, which could enable a completely gas-free ownership experience for people with short commutes. Once the electric range is exhausted the vehicle functions like a normal hybrid, and the batteries must be recharged to replenish range.

Fortunately, the 4xe's premium starting price buys a premium SUV, even at the base level. Standard features include Capri leather upholstery, a 10.1-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch passenger display. A dual-pane panoramic moonroof and heated power seats are also standard. A full suite of advanced safety systems come standard as well. All 4xe trims come with full-speed forward collision warnings, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alerts, LED headlights, and more.

Three things to love about the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

New SUV

The Grand Cherokee has always been the Jeep that could haul the family to the mall as easily as it could traverse serious off-road terrain. The design was starting to age, however, after ten years on the market without a major redesign. Jeep fixed that for the 2022 model year, and after a week behind the wheel, there are three things we think you should know about the new SUV.

It Comes in Two Formats

The three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L debuted in 2021 as the first Grand Cherokee with more than two rows of seating. The standard Grand Cherokee followed it with many of the same features and upscale finishes, but in a more familiar two-row SUV format. The move to a two-body-style lineup for the Grand Cherokee does not mean there's less choice. The standard two-row model is offered in a staggering number of configurations, including a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant.

2022 Jeep Grand CherokeeThe new Grand Cherokee ups the luxury considerably. Stellantis

It's Luxurious

Top Grand Cherokee trims have long been plusher and more luxurious than most people expect from a Jeep, and the new model takes things further down that road. Top trims feature luxurious materials such as quilted leathers and real wood trim, along with desirable and innovative electronics features. An optional passenger-side touchscreen offers climate controls and other functions to front-seat passengers, and Stellantis' UConnect infotainment software is among the easiest to use and most intuitive interfaces in the auto business.

2022 Jeep Grand CherokeeThe Grand Cherokee can take its passengers far off the beaten path.Stellantis

It's Available with Three Strong Powertrains

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is available, and Jeep's excellent 4xe plug-in hybrid can be added to certain trims. The Wrangler was the first vehicle to use the system, which provides instant torque and excellent all-electric driving range. When the battery is depleted below a certain level, the vehicle then switches to operate as a normal hybrid.

Customize your Jeep with new factory graphics

Jeeps of all types are among the most customized vehicles on the planet, and it's just as common to see a completely tricked out Wrangler as it is to see one in factory fresh condition. To capitalize on the popularity of aftermarket parts, the automaker offers several upgrades and accessories through Mopar. To provide even more customization opportunities, Jeep announced the Jeep Graphic Studio, a program to create new graphics and appearance upgrades for its vehicles.

Jeep Graphic StudioA variety of products are available, including interior and exterior graphics.Jeep

Independent aftermarket suppliers have offered graphics packages and custom decals for years, but Jeep's program brings a 5- or 7-year guarantee against UV damage and peeling. The automaker says that every graphic ships with installation tools and video instructions to ensure proper and simple application. Each graphic is custom measured to fit Jeep vehicles. Textured graphics will also be offered, which Jeep says can show features such as topographic lines.

Jeep Graphic StudioLater this year, customers will be able to order custom names for the hood of their Wrangler or Gladiator.Jeep

Products from the Jeep Graphic Studio will start at $40 and climb to $165. The automaker says that the shop will sell 3D-printed shifter inserts, hood graphics, and fender inserts. Later this year, Wrangler and Gladiator owners will be able to order hood graphics that include custom names. If you're interested in getting a custom graphic for your Jeep, head here to check out the catalog.

2023 Nissan Leaf pricing announced

Updated EV

Nissan is nearing the release of the Ariya, its first new EV in several years. Even so, the brand hasn't forgotten about its first mass-market EV, the Leaf. It was an early entrant in the space, and has been an efficient, affordable, commuter car for over a decade. The car got a mild facelift for 2023, with updated wheels and exterior styling accents. Today, Nissan announced pricing for the Leaf, which starts at just under $29,000.

The Leaf SV Plus features a 60-kWh battery for a range of 212 miles. It comes with a 160-kW motor that makes 214 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. 2022 Nissan Altima: Three things to know

Comfortable midsize sedan

The Nissan Altima may not get the attention or the praise that the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord get, but it's a solid entry in an ultra-competitive segment. It's also one of few options in its class with available all-wheel drive. We spent a week with the 2022 Nissan Altima SR Midnight Edition with AWD and came away from the experience impressed. Here are three things to know about the car.

The 2022 Nissan Altima is a Good Value

With a starting price in the mid-$20,000 range and available all-wheel drive, it's hard to complain about value here. The Altima is still reasonably priced at the top end, where it maxes out at around $35,000 before options and fees. That's a great value for a spacious, comfortable car like the Altima, and with all-wheel drive it's a great all-weather commuter.

2022 Nissan AltimaNissan offers the Altima in several configurations.Nissan

2022 Altima Interior Space and Comfort are Generous

It's easy to ignore Nissan's Zero Gravity seats as another marketing buzzword, but they are legitimately comfortable and supportive in a way that not many others are. Available leather upholstery and contrast stitching give the interior an upscale feel, but even lower trims' cloth upholstery feels nice and works well from a visual standpoint. Up front, there's room for both passengers to stretch out, and the driver won't feel cramped on leg or headroom. Back-seat passengers get a similar treatment, as there's plenty of space for adults and kids. Parents will find an easy time loading and unloading car seats as well.

2023 Nissan AltimaThe Altima gets an update for 2023 with fresh styling and more tech.Nissan

The 2023 Nissan Altima Gets an Update

Nissan is refreshing the Altima for 2023 with a facelift, new tech, and better safety features. The new car will go on sale in the fall of 2022 and will come in several trims, including one with Nissan's truck VC-Turbo engine. The Altima's most noticeable update will be its front fascia, which is all-new for 2023. Nissan gives the car a fresh grille design that varies depending on the trim, and LED headlights will be standard. Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard, and the Altima is available with all-wheel drive, ProPilot Assist, and more.
