Classic elegance meets modern powertrain. Lunaz has begun production of the first electrified classic Rolls-Royce models. Like with modern Rolls-Royces, production is limited and the cost is high.

The first Rolls-Royce model to be converted by Lunaz is a 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V. The car received a ground-up restoration and the incorporation of Lunaz's proprietary electric powertrain and full suite of hardware and software upgrades.

"The time is right for an electric Rolls-Royce. We are answering the need to marry beautiful classic design with the usability, reliability and sustainability of an electric powertrain," said David Lorenz, Founder, Lunaz. "More than ever we are meeting demand for clean-air expressions of the most beautiful and luxurious cars in history. We are proud to make a classic Rolls-Royce relevant to a new generation."

The conversion and restoration features the installation of a 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the largest in the world inside an auto, that delivers a range of over 300 miles.

The weighting of switchgear has been engineered to operate an entirely new powertrain with the same haptic feedback as the original. Instrumentation stays true to the spirit of the 1960s design, with delicate integration of a battery range meter and power gauge.

Every car by Lunaz is equipped with the capability for both home charging and rapid charging.

The company starts each model's changeover by taking the car back to bare metal, 3D scanning it, and fully restoring it. Then, the conversion takes place. The internal combustion engine and associated systems are removed and the chassis is prepared for electrification. The electrified powertrain's components are integrated into the existing design of the car - the fuel filler cap becomes a charging port.

Lunaz allows each customer to be involved in the design and technology process relying on Design Director Jen Holloway to execute their vision. The first model finished features a contemporary two-tone paint scheme, with Midland Grey on the upper of the car and Cinereous Grey on the lower. The hand-painted feature line that breaks the two colors is inspired by a period item specified by the car's previous client - a pink bakelite telephone that sat between the rear occupants. This item has been retained in the final build and upgraded to incorporate modern cellular phone technology, encrypted for privacy.

The interior scheme tastefully echoes the exterior. The very finest sustainably-sourced leather is crafted by Lunaz' in-house specialist team and specified in Argent Grey. Instead of traditional seat piping, a double welt feature is presented in Whisper with Argent Grey, creating the look of a contemporary pinstripe detail. The car's grab-handles are the same shade pink as the feature line.

The original woodwork inside the Phantom V has been restored and finished with a contemporary satin treatment. The update is offset with rose gold inlays that extends to the door cappings, front fascia, and the picnic table backs affixed to the privacy division that separates the driver and rear passenger compartment.

Though vintage, modern conveniences abound. The car comes with an integrated infotainment system that includes navigation. Audio can be split between the front and rear allowing the driver to be the only one to hear navigation voice commands. The car has modern air conditioning that can have its settings vary by seat.

Under the picnic tables, rear passengers have two screens. The center unit features a bar service that can be customized by size to perfectly fit the bottle of the buyer's choice.

The 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz is built in eight-seat configuration with a front bench for three occupants, rear bench for a further three and two occasional seats.

Rear floor mats have been custom made in alpaca wool, a material that is rarer than cashmere, softer than lambswool, and is considered highly sustainable.

Following modifications of Phantoms, Lunaz will move on to converting Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds. The models are available in a variety of body styles, including four-door limousine, two-door coupé and drop head coupé.

The first tranche of Rolls-Royce cars by Lunaz will be limited to 30. Orders are already being accepted. To meet this demand, Lunaz is doubling its workforce at its technical headquarters in Silverstone, England.

Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds by Lunaz will feature an 80-kilowatt-hour battery that can deliver over 300 miles of range. Luaz will make both fixed head and drophead body styles across Silver Cloud I, II and III available for purchase.

Electrified Rolls-Royces by Lunaz will be available globally. They can only be purchased via a direct relationship with the factory, meaning there are no dealerships in the way of the purchasing process. Prices for a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud by Lunaz starts at £350,000 (not including local taxes). Pricing for a Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz starts at £500,000 (not including local taxes).

Lunaz already offers electrified Bentley and Jaguar models.

First-year Ford F-150 Lightning production numbers doubled
Ford

Ford has begun serial production of the new F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck, marking what could be one of the most important days in recent automotive history. The first trucks rolled off the assembly line at Ford's Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan today, so America's best-selling truck has finally gone electric. Ford wants to sell two million EVs per year by 2026 and have half of its global sales volume to be electric by 2030.

Ford F-150 LightningPast meets future: Ford's new electric pickup will be the F-150 Lightningautomotivemap.com

Ford has seen extreme demand for the trucks, with 200,000 reservations since the books opened. To deliver, the automaker plans to increase production to an annual rate of 150,000 units by next year, which involved huge investments in the Rouge Center and created hundreds of jobs. Ford's total investment for the F-150 Lightning crests $1 billion across Michigan alone, and has created 1,700 jobs across various facilities in the state.

Though the Lightning starts around $40,000, the most mainstream models will cost much more than that. The F-150 Lightning Pro, while affordable, is a stripped-down truck intended for commercial buyers. It's still a forward-looking electric truck with amazing capabilities, but it lacks much of the creature comforts and features that everyday drivers expect. Higher trims get the latest driver assistance features, including BlueCruise, which is Ford's semi-autonomous hands-free driving assistant. A 12-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more.

Ford F-150 Lightning could get tank turn

Ford patented a tank turn feature in late 2020.

Ford

The F-150 Lightning is packed with cool tech and capability, but we're learning that Ford has even bigger plans for its first electric pickup. Inside EVs found an exciting document on the Lightning Owners Forum that shows ford applied to patent a tank turn feature like the one we saw Rivian pull off a few years ago, where the truck spins around a center point using its electric motors. Rivian's tank turn feature still hasn't made it to market, so it's possible that Ford beats them to the punch.

Ford F-150 LightningTank turn allows the truck to spin while almost completely stationary.Ford

Ford applied for the patent in October 2020, but it's just now making its way out. In the document, Ford gives an example of how it could work: "Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture are disclosed to perform a tank turn. An example vehicle includes a first wheel and a second wheel, the first wheel located on an end of a first axle, the second wheel located on an end of the second axle, the end of the first axle opposite to the end of the second axle, a first suspension coupled to the first wheel, a second suspension coupled to the second wheel, and a controller to drive the first axle in a first direction, drive the second axle in the second direction and decrease a first suspension load of the first suspension and a second suspension load of the second suspension."

As Inside EVs points out, Rivian's tank turn feature employs the R1 T's quad-motor setup to drive each wheel individually. The F-150 Lightning doesn't currently have a four-motor choice and instead offers two motors – one on each axle. It's important to note that Rivian patented tank turn and showed that it could work, but there hasn't yet been a production vehicle that offers the capability. Toyota filed a patent in 2019, but again it's just paperwork at this point.

Ford F-150 LightningNo automaker has brought tank turn to production yet.

To achieve the turn, Ford has a few options. The most obvious would be to offer a quad-motor upgrade in future model years. It's unclear if such a feature is in the works or if Ford plans to provide beefier versions of the Lightning, such as a Raptor variant with upgraded motors. The automaker could also design gearing to reverse the wheels on one side while the others drive forward, or it could use braking to lock the wheels and tighten the turning radius.
