Nissan awards grants to 27 nonprofits that inform, inspire, and celebrate diversity

The Nissan Foundation has announced a new round of grants to nonprofit organizations. The 27 organizations that benefit from the grants are located in the Southern California, Tennessee, Central Mississippi, Eastern Michigan and the New York and Atlanta metro areas.

Over its 28-year history, the Nissan Foundation has awarded more than $12 million to approximately 150 organizations that offer educational programs that inform, inspire and celebrate diversity among the various racial, ethnic and cultural groups that make up society.

"The Nissan Foundation's singular focus from day one has been to stimulate dialogue around race relations and cultural diversity and to support organizations celebrating our differences while reminding us of our similarities," said Nissan Foundation President Travis Parman. "Our 2020 grantees have been engaging in this important, difficult, and often uncomfortable, work for many years. It's our honor and privilege to recognize and amplify their efforts."

Since it was founded in 1992, the mission of the Nissan Foundation was been "to build community by valuing culture diversity", according to a release. The Foundation was founded in response to the civil unrest that occurred near Nissan North America's then-U.S. sales operations in Southern California following the Rodney King trial verdict.

The Nissan Foundation will begin accepting letters of intent for the 2021 grant cycle in mid-October with a submission deadline of November 16. Applicants must be based in California, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Tennessee, or Texas.

On the court, you know what you need to do. Get the win. You may have to pivot, stop to catch your breath, and change up the plan along the way, but that's all part of the game. Whether it's March Madness or a Nissan company plan, both follow a similar route.

Nissan, an official NCAA partner, debuted "Thrill", a new ad campaign starring Brie Larson during the NCAA Men's Final Four over the weekend. The new spot, named "The New Nissan" aims to showcase the company's heritage and future.

The spot opens with Larson experiencing some of Nissan's most iconic heritage vehicles through the decades, asserting that cars once played important roles in pop culture, but noting that the feeling has been lost in recent years. The story takes a sudden turn to feature Larson driving spiritedly in a Z Proto, then off-roading in a Frontier, driving an all-electric LEAF, and behind the wheel of a Rogue. The spot ends with Larson driving away in the Nissan Ariya, followed by a wide shot displaying the new Nissan product portfolio.

"At Nissan, we want to thrill people at every turn and we're excited to showcase this with our completely refreshed product lineup," said Allyson Witherspoon, vice president and chief marketing officer, Nissan U.S. "We've been working with Brie for more than a year and she definitely brings the spirit of our message to life in this latest campaign."

This isn't the first time that Larson has worked with Nissan. She was the face of the "Refuse to Compromise" campaign for the redesigned Sentra. She also was part of the launch of the 2021 Nissan Rogue.

In the coming months, Nissan will launch the redesigned 2022 Pathfinder and Frontier, and debut the next-gen Nissan Z. That's all before the Nissan Ariya arrives on U.S. shores closer to the start of 2022.

The first 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible off the line was auctioned for charity tonight.

The United Way for Southeastern Michigan was a double beneficiary on Friday night. Proceeds from the sale of the first production 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition and the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible benefitted the charity. The winning bid for the C8 Corvette Convertible was $400,000.

The Corvette Convertible traces its roots back to the original 'Vette - the 1953 model was only available as a rag top. The modern C8 Corvette Convertible engineered the hard top to provide a quieter cabin, increased security, and a cleaner look than previous convertible designs. It can be activated at speeds u pro 30 mpg and retracts in 16 seconds.

The roof is powered by six electric motors — a Corvette first. A body-colored roof is standard, while Carbon Flash metallic-painted nacelles and roof are optional.

A divider glass window in the middle of the vehicle can be power adjusted with the top up or down. In addition to the roof, the car as the same rear spoiler used on the Stingray coupe's Z51 Performance Package, resulting in identical drag between the coupe and convertible with the top up.

The chassis was tweaked for the convertible, giving the convertible nearly the same performance as the coupe.

Like the Stingray coupe, the convertible is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible has a $68,495 starting MSRP.

Last year, Rick Hendrick, founder and CEO of Hendrick Companies, placed the winning bid for the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray VIN 0001 at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. All proceeds from that sale benefitted the Detroit Children's Fund, a nonprofit focused on high-potential investments to provide Detroit school children the opportunity to receive an excellent education.
