Rolls-Royce HQ is buzzing with record levels of production

A 250,000-strong workforce is busy with production at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex, England. The bees in the company's apiary are set to exceeded their 2020 volume targets for honey production already this year.

The English Honey Bees came through the winter in excellent health and have spent the spring emerging from their hives and foraging on the half-a-million trees, shrubs, and wildflowers growing across the 42-acre Rolls‑Royce site. Additionally, they fly among eight acres of sedum plants growing on the manufacturing plant's 'living roof' – the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Rolls-Royce says that, "the more adventurous bees make sorties into the surrounding Goodwood Estate, whose 12,000 acres of West Sussex countryside are among the glories of the South Downs National Park."

The Goodwood Apiary consists of six traditional, English-crafted, wooden beehives, each bearing a polished stainless steel nameplate handcrafted in the company's workshop. Five are named after cars in the Rolls-Royce product family – "Phantom", "Wraith", "Ghost", "Dawn" and "Cullinan" – while the sixth, the 'Spirit of Ecstasy', celebrates the marque's mascot.

At the end of each season, the bees' honey is harvested and hand-processed by local specialists. It is then served to guests of the marque including customers who have commissioned the bespoke automaker to craft a vehicle for them.

"The Apiary further underlines our commitment to the environment, which informs everything we do at Goodwood," says Richard Carter, Director of Global Communications at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "Our sustainable buildings, thermal ponds, rainwater management systems and wildfowl refuge have already made the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood one of the UK's most eco-friendly manufacturing facilities. Through this project, which taps into the biodiversity of our site, including our huge living roof, we're making an important contribution to conserving Britain's vital bee population."

In recent years, bees in the U.K. have seen their habitats destroyed and populations dwindle. The Bee Lines initiative, of which the Goodwood Apiary is a part, supports farmers and landowners in creating new flower-rich 'corridors' to link areas of habitat and help bees and other pollinator species to thrive. Residents and businesses within the National Park boundaries are also being encouraged to get involved through initiatives such as planting wildflowers in gardens and grounds.

The Ioniq 5 will be the first dedicated electric model designed on Hyundai's new battery electric vehicle platform.

Hyundai Motor Company, the parent of the Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis brands, has released a new series of photos and videos teasing the forthcoming Ioniq 5. The midsize crossover is slated to Abe the first model in the company's Ioniq dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup brand.

It will also be the first vehicle that is underpinned by Hyundai's new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The architecture is similar to what General Motors unveiled with its Ultium platform. The vehicle, Hyundai says, will showcase a "fundamental shift in design approach" for the company where vehicles are designed around the platform rather than modifying existing vehicles to put in BEV power systems like what is in the Kona EV.

The fresh design elements in the Ioniq 5 include Parametric Pixels, the smallest unit of digital imaging, as well as the CUV's color, material, and finish (CMF) direction that works to connect digital functionality with its analog counterpart. The car's front end features pixel-inspired lights, u-shaped and squared off at the corners. Its clamshell hood spans the entire width of the car, which is a concerted effort to minimize panel gaps and increase aerodynamics.

The wheels feature aero-optimized design and come in 20-inch diameter, the first ever fitted to a Hyundai EV.

"Ioniq 5 presents an all-new customer experience through innovative EV design that is evocative of the icon that established Hyundai's design DNA," said SangYup Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center. "Beginning with Ioniq 5, our dedicated BEV lineup brand will redefine the relationship between people and their cars, establishing a new standard against which all BEV design experiences will be measured."

In addition to the photos, Hyundai released videos that preview the Ioniq 5's core technologies. Three feature "ultimate camping" scenarios where owners are able to use the Ioniq 5's general power supply (110/220V). In each video, the camper is seen using IONIQ 5's 3.5KW of V2L-supplied power, which they use to roast a turkey in a large oven, listen to music on high-end audio speakers, and exercise on a treadmill—all at a camping site.

The '5 Min Challenge' video highlights Ioinq 5's ultra-fast charging capability that enables it to drive more than 62 miles with only a 5-minute charge (WLTP).

The sharply curves of the rear of the Cadillac Celestiq allude to sophisticated exterior design.

Today Cadillac provided a sneak peek at the forthcoming Celestiq show car. The ultra-luxury, fully electric vehicle (EV) is designed to be the pinnacle of General Motors EVs. Cadillac says that the car embodies their commitment to "reimagine what's possible in design and technology".

The vehicle is built on the General Motors Ultium platform which allows batteries to be nested in the floor of the car. Cadillac says that the openness of the body of the Celestiq allowed design and engineering teams to "artfully integrate cutting edge technology" into the vehicle.

This has resulted in a flagship that has a dramatic presence, a low profile, and rearward proportions. At a preview in mid-2020, select journalists who saw the car in the flesh described it as very attractive and impressive.

Cadillac will offer the Celestiq with a curated selection of hand-crafted materials. The company has hinted that there will be some customization options available for owners, increasing the likelihood that these vehicles will be made to order with a very low production volume. The vehicles will feature all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and a full-glass roof.

Cadillac aims to give the Celestiq the first four-quadrant, suspended-particle-device smart glass roof. This will allow each occupant of the vehicle to set their own level of roof transparency. Toyota currently offers an electrochroamic roof in the Venza that delivers a variety of transparency options for the entire roof.

At the front of the cabin, the driver and front-seat passenger will be able to enjoy a "pillar-to-pillar freeform display with active privacy" this sounds a lot like what Mercedes-Benz introduced with its Hyperscreen. Console screens between seats in the front and back will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays to minimize distractions.

Production of the Cadillac Celestiq flagship sedan is still widely considered to be a few years off.
