Maserati MC20 prototype sports car spied testing in Italy

Don't call it a comeback. They've been here for years. Call it a reinvention. An evolution. A modernization. Whatever you call it, it's all part of a cash and design infusion into the Italian automaker that has be struggling to find a foothold in the marketplace for years.

Fresh on the heels of announcing an electrified future, Maserati has rebased its own series of spy shots featuring the MC20 prototype. The MC20 is a sports car that was designed and engineered at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, Italy.

That bit about being straight from Italy is important to the brand. Despite being owned by a company headquartered in the Netherlands (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) that is about to merge with a company headquartered in France (PSA Group), the Maserati team has been given the freedom to design using Italian sports car DNA.

The selection of photos Maserati publicized as part of the testing announcement were meant to illustrate the company's new global statement, "Master of Italian Audacity." In the infamous words of that classic American tale "Dodgeball", "That's a bold strategy, Cotton."

Maserati is calling the MC20 the "first and ultimate" expression of that new statement.

The prototype has been photographed at night in Piazza degli Affari in Milan, below a giant white marble hand statue with broken fingers called "L.O.V.E" by renowned artist Maurizio Cattelan. The statue was created in 2010 and its name is an acronym for the Italian words libertà, odio, vendetta, eternità (freedom, hate, vengeance, eternity).

The car's trip around Milan kicks off the start of a period of road and track tests, in various conditions of use, to acquire vital data for the preparation of the car's final setup.

The Integra returns next year as a 2023 model.

In the last couple years, we've seen a few big-name nostalgic automotive nameplates return to the market. There was the Land Rover Defender and more recently the Ford Bronco. Now, it's Acura's turn to stroll down memory lane, as it gears up for the release of the fifth-generation 2023 Integra. The car will return in 2022 as a four-door with a liftback, and most importantly, it gets plenty of go-fast bits in the places that matter.

Before we go too far: Yes, the Integra looks like the ILX and the TLX sedans, and yes, it has four doors. Remember that the first-, second-, and third-generation cars were available with four doors. It wasn't until the Acura RSX (sold as the Integra in Japan and Australia) that the car shaved two doors and became exclusively a two-door hatchback. So, while the look may be disappointing to some, it's not out of place.

All the specs are here, too. The 2023 Integra will get a high-output 1.5-liter engine, a limited slip differential, and an available six-speed manual gearbox. If that isn't the recipe for a fun front-drive enthusiast car, we don't know what is. The prototype rides on matte-finish 19-inch wheels and comes with Brembo high-performance brakes.

Acura says that the 2023 Integra will mark the car's first time being built in the United States, and notes that the car will enter production at its Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. The car will be formally introduced in the first half of 2022, so we'll have to wait until then for detailed specs and pricing information. The good news, however, is that Acura says the car will start around $30,000, making it accessible to a wide swath of the car buying public.

Toyota announces pricing for 2022 GR86

The new GR86 gets more power and chassis refinements.

Toyota and Subaru are among few remaining automakers still building small sports cars. The 86 and BRZ twins are a rarity these days: Two-door, rear-drive sports cars with available manual transmissions. Even so, the cars were down on power and needed structural improvements to truly stand out, both of which they got for the 2022 model year. Today, Toyota announced pricing for the 2022 GR86, which starts at under $30,000.

The new GR86 addresses many of the complaints that buyers had about the last generation cars. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is on board that makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque – both improvements on the previous model's 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration improves from a 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds to 6.1 seconds for cars equipped with the manual transmission(MT) and from 8.0 to 6.6 seconds for cars with the automatic transmission (AT).

Toyota says that the GR86's chassis is stiffer for the new model year, thanks to new front cross-members and bracing under the hood. Engineers focused on weight control for the cars, resulting in a curb weight of just 2,811 pounds for MT models and 2,851 for AT models. For reference, that's between 400 and 500 pounds more than the tiny Mazda Miata, depending on transmission choice.

The base GR86 with manual transmission starts at $27,700 before destination and the top GR86 Premium with automatic transmission starts at $31,800. Pricing for the 86 is reasonable, no matter which way you cut it, but there's a bonus that makes the deal even sweeter. Every buyer of a 2022 GR86 will get a one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), which includes the ability to attend a high-performance driving event and admission to other NASA events.
