Italian automakers like Ferrari and Maserati are steeped in racing heritage. Every once in a while that heritage comes to the forefront of a new limited edition model. The Maserati F Tributo special edition Ghibli and Levante are just that.

The story of Maserati's racing history begins 95 years ago. On April 25, 1926, the first race car wearing the Trident on its hood, the Tipo26, won the 1,500 cc class at the Targa Florio with Alfieri Maserati at the wheel. Maserati, an Italian automotive engineer, was a key player in founding and establishing the Maserati brand, alongside his brothers.

Twenty-eight years from that first car's win, Maserati, the company, made its Formula One debut with a 250F driven by Juan Manuel Fangio. The new Ghibli and Levante's names derive from that F1 partnership. The "F" is for Fangio.

Maserati is making the special series available in two exclusive colors Rosso Tributo and Azzurro Tributo, two colors designed to be reminiscent of Italian motorsports. The red is derived from its traditional application in the motorsports world, especially in Italian motor racing history. The blue was created to bring to mind Maserati's historic home, the City of Modena. Blue stands alongside yellow on the city's flag and coat of arms.

Further, there are references to Fangio's 250F with the special editions' yellow brake calipers and the wheel trims. Maserati has given the Levante F Tributo Anteo 21-inch black wheels and the Ghibli gets 21-inch Titano glossy black wheels.

Each special edition is marked with a specific glossy black badge on the wheel arch and a body-color trident logo on the C-pillar.

The interior reflects the exterior with either red or yellow stitching holding together black full-grain Pieno Fiore leather.

Maserati will offer just 345 of the models for sale and both versions of the special edition will be available to U.S. customers.

Maserati will offer the Ghibli F Tributo based on the Ghibli S GranSport, which retails for $88,035 or the Ghibli Q4 GranSport ($90,535). Both models have a 424-hosepower V6 under the hood. Levante versions of the special edition are similarly engined and based on the Levante S GranSport ($95,385). Exact pricing for F Tributo models will be available closer to their North American on-sale date of June 2021.

Toyota announces pricing for 2022 GR86

The new GR86 gets more power and chassis refinements.

Toyota

Toyota and Subaru are among few remaining automakers still building small sports cars. The 86 and BRZ twins are a rarity these days: Two-door, rear-drive sports cars with available manual transmissions. Even so, the cars were down on power and needed structural improvements to truly stand out, both of which they got for the 2022 model year. Today, Toyota announced pricing for the 2022 GR86, which starts at under $30,000.

The new GR86 addresses many of the complaints that buyers had about the last generation cars. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is on board that makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque – both improvements on the previous model's 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration improves from a 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds to 6.1 seconds for cars equipped with the manual transmission(MT) and from 8.0 to 6.6 seconds for cars with the automatic transmission (AT).

Toyota says that the GR86's chassis is stiffer for the new model year, thanks to new front cross-members and bracing under the hood. Engineers focused on weight control for the cars, resulting in a curb weight of just 2,811 pounds for MT models and 2,851 for AT models. For reference, that's between 400 and 500 pounds more than the tiny Mazda Miata, depending on transmission choice.

The base GR86 with manual transmission starts at $27,700 before destination and the top GR86 Premium with automatic transmission starts at $31,800. Pricing for the 86 is reasonable, no matter which way you cut it, but there's a bonus that makes the deal even sweeter. Every buyer of a 2022 GR86 will get a one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), which includes the ability to attend a high-performance driving event and admission to other NASA events.

Chevy confirmed the new Z06 with 670 horsepower.

Chevrolet

After years of speculation, Chevy announced the mid-engine eighth-generation Corvette for the 2020 model year. Almost immediately, a new round of rumors took off around the potential for an even higher performance Z06 model. Chevy finally confirmed the car yesterday with a design and specs that improve on the standard Corvette in almost every way.

The star of the show is the new 5.5-liter flat-plane crank LT6 V8. The mill churns out an unbelievable 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and can rev all the way out to 8,600 rpm. Power numbers aside, the sky-high redline lets the engine wail and scream in a way that we've not heard outside of Corvette racing cars. The hand-assembled engines are paired with a single technician through the build process and each unit carries a plaque with the builder's name.

To differentiate the Z06 from "normal" Corvettes, Chevy gave the car unique front and rear fascias, 20-inch front/21-inch rear wheels, and a configurable rear spoiler designed to improve high-speed stability. The Z06 is available with lightweight carbon wheels designed to reduce unsprung weight. The car itself is 9.4 centimeters wider than the Corvette Stingray to accommodate larger wheel sizes and incorporate larger cooling air vents on the side.

As a more track-focused Corvette, the Z06 comes with tech to improve performance and record drives. When in track mode, the Z06's Performance Traction Management system is activated, which offers five levels of torque reduction and brake intervention, and an electronic limited slip differential helps keep the rear planted.

Inside, the Z06 improves on the Stingray's cabin with seven interior color choices, three seat options, six seatbelt designs, and two interior carbon fiber trim packages. Chevy says that the car's interior has a bespoke and upscale feel that sets it apart from the standard Corvette, which itself already had a gorgeous cabin.

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will be built at the automaker's Bowling Green Assembly plant in Kentucky. Chevy will build the cars in both left- and right-hand drive configurations when production kicks off in summer 2022.
