Such a Tease
Hyundai teases first Ioniq family model, the Ioniq 5
The first teaser video of the Ioinq 5 has been released by Hyundai Motor Group. The model, the first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) in the new Ioniq brand lineup will be launching in early 2021.
The Ioniq 5 midsize SUV is based on Hyundai's 45 EV concept which, like the Le Fil Rouge concept, was a modern interpretation of the Hyundai Pony Concept, only this time it was focused on powertrain technology. Hyundai says that the car's diamond silhouette foreshadows the design direction of future electric vehicles the company will produce while holding fast to the "Sensuous Sportiness" design identity.
The car will ride on the Hyundai Motor Group's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). That architecture is exclusively for battery electric vehicles. The platform's design allows for a "smart living space" complete with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity, and unique features - the company says that a glovebox deigned as a drawer is an example of one such innovation.
The teaser, a 30-second video entitled "The New Horizon of EV" shows pixels and dots converging on white space that Hyundai says is representative of "a new era of EV". The video plays up what Hyundai calls the "three extras": extra power for life, extra time for you, and extraordinary experiences. The car will offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) bi-directional charging capability, fast-charging capability, and a number of other features.

The Ioniq name is a portmonteau of "ion" and "unique". The IONIQ 5 will be the first of three vehicles for the new brand that includes the Ioniq 6, a sedan; followed by Ioniq 7, a large SUV. The Ioniq 6 sedan is set to be introduced in 2022. It is based on the company's Prophecy concept vehicle, which was unveiled in March. That concept car's design gave a nod to the large car models of the 1920s and 30s but brought forward digital technology of today. Ioinq 7 will follow in 2024.
