Genesis cancelling six-speed G70 after just 100(ish) customers buy the model

The Genesis G70 is the automaker's most popular model. Still, out of the 11,901 models the company sold last year, around 100 were equipped with a manual transmission - 0.8 percent of the sales. That extremely low take rate is why the company has decided to stop offering the transmission after the 2021 model year. Road & Track first reported the move.

Genesis prices the G70 at $36,000. To get the six-speed transmission, buyers would have to be willing to pay at least $2,600 more and be willing to accept that their version of the model is less fuel-efficient. Currently, the 2020 Genesis G70 is available to be built with a manual, according to the company's online configuration tool.

This pricing structure flies in the face of traditional manual gearbox pricing methods, which generally see the automatic transmission on higher trims and the six-speed offered on entry level models.

Genesis isn't the only company ditching a manual. Honda recently announced that the Honda Accord six-speed will retire after this model year.

According to Edmunds, in 2020 just 41 of the 327 new car models 13 percent) sold in the U.S. is offered with a manual transmission. A decade ago, 37 percent were sold with that style transmission. Why? Simply put, the demand isn't there so automakers have stopped selling them. Also, automatic transmissions have gotten better generally offering better fuel economy than manuals.

Most of the models offered with a manual transmission come from companies that produce products designed to be sold in Europe as well as the U.S. Five- and six-speeds are more popular across the pond. However, the influx of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles as a result of government regulation may be having the percentage of manual transmission drivers decreasing.

In the U.S., 23 percent of those surveyed recently by Cars.com that said that they drive a manual transmission car own a BMW. Eleven percent drive a manual Toyota while nine percent were with Honda. Six percent of the audience drove a Ford or an Audi.

Secrets are hard to keep these days. It seems like new products always end up being leaked by one of the hundreds of people involved in the development process, to the point that even the most secretive companies have a hard time unveiling a product that people don't already know about. That wasn't the case this week, though. After announcing the final version of its NSX supercar at Monterey Car Week, Acura took to the skies with an impressive drone show that eventually spelled out a message no one expected to see: The Integra is coming back in 2022.



The original car launched in 1986, and its legend grew over time. After accumulating dozens of awards and spawning an entire industry around customizing and enhancing the Integra, Honda and Acura discontinued the car in 2001. We saw a successor to the crown in the Acura RSX for a few short years afterward, but it's been 15 years since a small, tossable sports car has graced the Acura catalog. Granted, Honda has been on a tear with the Civic Si and Civic Type-R, but there has been a hole in the Acura lineup for some time now.

Waiting is the hardest part, as they say. Other than the gorgeous drone display and tantalizingly mysterious teaser photo, we know nothing, which is a difficult spot to be as a car enthusiast. There are a few details, though. The car will return in 2022 as a "compact premium entrant," according to the press release. Company VP and Acura Brand Officer Jon Ikeda also said that the car is "returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience."

Given parent company Honda's success with performance versions of the Civic, we're optimistic that the 2022 Integra will put its compact dimensions to good use on the road and on the track. We'll have to be patient, though, because official details won't become available until closer to the car's introduction in 2022.

The Genesis G70 got a refresh for 2022, which brought an updated interior with new tech, along with a massaged front- and rear-end. I'm spending a week testing the renewed sports sedan, and have some initial thoughts after two days with the new model. I drove the 2021 G70 and felt that it was a cohesive package with few major downfalls. The 2022 model's improvements have made me like it even more. A full review will be out next week, but in the meantime, here are three things to know about the 2022 Genesis G70.

It's Plush

Close your eyes and step into a G70 and you'll be hard pressed to believe you're sitting in anything other than a European luxury sedan. The cabin is gorgeous, and features high-end materials, great visibility, and intuitive technology. The front seats are sporty but supportive and comfortable, and high trim levels features super diamond stitched leathers and very few low-rent materials inside.

It's Quick

I'm testing the Sport Prestige 3.3T model, which his powered by a – you guessed it – twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine. With 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque on tap, the car will boogie. Its 0-60 mph time lands a at a modest 4.7 seconds, but Genesis did a good job of building in enough drama to make things interesting. The car's sonorous exhaust, rush of power off the line, and responsive transmission all work together to create a special experience. Even G70s equipped with the lesser turbocharged 2.0-liter engine still feel quick, thanks to 252 horsepower.

It's Gorgeous

I tested a Genesis GV80 a few months ago, and found that it was the first car I'd driven around town that caused people to stop and take photos. Now, with the G70, I have my second. Despite a few awkward lines, created when Genesis added the split headlight and taillight look to the car, it's otherwise one of the sleekest and most eye-catching sedans around. Deeply sculpted sides and the large-but-not-too-large diamond grille also add to the look.
