The Mazda RX-Vision GT3 and the Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo were designed for the gaming world but the Team Fordzilla P1 concept is the first vehicle designed in collaboration between an automaker and gamers.

First revealed during the gamescom event, the virtual racing car was created using fan notes on Twitter at different design stages. Gamers decided on elements including seating position, cockpit style and drivetrain before Ford designers worked up their interpretations of the brief.

The winning result is a car designed by Ford exterior designer Arturo Ariño, which garnered 83.8 percent of the votes. In total, close to 225,000 fans voted.

"Project P1 took me to the beginning of it all," said Ariño. "The reason why I became a car designer in the first place was to design something never seen before and something that pushes the boundaries. This vehicle will be visually stunning, and while it will push the gamer to the limits of focus and reflexes, it will also be hugely rewarding to drive."

Ariño drew inspiraron for his design from the Ford GT, but used unique touches like morphing technology on the body to offer the stability of a longtail racer on the high-speed straights of Le Mans, or a shorter body for tighter circuits like Monaco.

The race car is expected to make its gaming debut in 2021 as Ford is in advanced discussions with a leading game maker.

A real-life scale model of the car will be built later this year. The process has already started at Ford's design studios in Cologne, Germany.

TeamFordzilla.com, a new addition to the esports community, will provide a permanent home for Ford's official esports team. Fans are able to follow live Twitch feeds of races, download vehicle graphics for use in-game, and keep up-to-date with the latest news.

Ford launched Team Fordzilla – its first ever esports team – in 2019 with individual teams in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, consisting of hand-picked racers. Each team competes in national competitions with dedicated team captains, with the best drivers representing Team Fordzilla at a European level. Currently, over 40 drivers race under the Team Fordzilla banner.

New off-roader

Ford Bronco Production Officially Begins

The Ford Bronco is finally ready for primetime.

Ford

The time is finally here. After years of speculation and several months of pandemic-related delays, the Ford Bronco is starting to roll off the assembly line. The SUV marks the first new Bronco model in Ford's lineup in 15 years, not counting the Bronco Sport, and is one of the most hyped and sought-after vehicles to hit the market in quite some time. Ford's announcement that production has begun will be accompanied by a special YouTube presentation that Ford says will include interviews with the Bronco team and with reservation holders at the automaker's new Modification Center.

Bronco production has driven Ford to invest $750 million into its Michigan Assembly Plant, and the automaker says it has added 2,700 jobs to support the rollout. Ford's push to begin production can't come soon enough. Over 125,000 Bronco orders have been placed, and multiple delays have pushed the vehicle's arrival back, meaning there is considerable demand for the off-road legend.

Ford is ready to capitalize on the craze and will offer several ways to customize the new vehicle. At its 1.7 million square-foot Modification Center, The Blue Oval will factory-install several optional modifications that include equipment such as a front bumper safari bar, graphics packages, roof racks, and more. That's on top of more than 200 factory-backed accessories that can be installed at the dealer, either at or after the time of purchase.

If you are hoping to get behind the wheel of a new Bronco, it could be a while. Even buyers that have been in line for a while now might not see their new vehicle until late 2021 or 2022, and the vehicle's official rollout will almost certainly re-spike demand. Even so, many feel it's worth the wait, and Ford's vehicle configuration tool is live, so go check it out for yourself.

New pickup truck

Ford to use Maverick name for new pickup

The Maverick name was last used on a car in the 1970s.

Ford

The pickup game is heating up, but it's not a big truck that we're here to talk about. Ford has just confirmed the Maverick name for its upcoming compact pickup, and the images included with today's press release appear to jive with the spy shots we've been seeing over the last year or so. Though it already has the best-selling pickup truck of all time in the F-150, a solid midsize entry in the Ranger, and a variety of heavy-duty options with its Super Duty lineup, Ford is set to add another pickup truck to its catalog with the compact Maverick.

Ford Maverick name Gabrielle Union will headline the unveiling on June 8th.Ford

The Maverick is expected to ride on a modified C2 platform, which currently underpins the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport. That makes the Maverick a tiny truck by today's full-size standards and will make it noticeably smaller than the existing Ford Ranger pickup. The platform also means that the Maverick will be a unibody pickup truck, which sets it apart from the body-on-frame construction of the F-150 and others.

The unibody design will give the Maverick a smoother, more car-like ride and better handling, but isn't typically used for trucks because body-on-frame construction gives pickups more rigidity and better capability to deal with heavy loads. Even so, the Maverick should still be able to muster a decent tow and payload rating, as we've seen from other unibody vehicles, such as the Honda Ridgeline.

Ford hasn't given out any other details on the Maverick, other than to note that the truck's official unveiling event will take place on June 8. Actress Gabrielle Union is headlining the event, which will take place across all of Ford's social channels, on Hulu, and on Union's Instagram and TikTok channel. Ford notes that the Maverick will be its first vehicle debut on its U.S. TikTok channel.
