Rare 1988 BMW M3 EVO II heads to auction (and it even has plaid seats)

BMW made just 500 M3 EVO II cars. Number 114 is headed to auction. The 1988 BMW E30 M3 EVO II crossing the block is part of the second limited production run of the road-going version of the E30 M3.

The model is part of a private collection and is expected to sell for between £50,000 and £70,000 when it is auctioned from June 29th to July 6th at TheMarket.co.uk in a 'no reserve' online auction.

"The E30 M3 is a bona fide legend thanks to its stunning looks, relative ease of maintenance, and the fact that it drives every bit as well as its reputation would have you believe," said Tristan Judge, director, The Market.

The car is regarded as one of the best drivers' cars the German automaker has ever produced. It's powered by a 220 bhp, four-cylinder S14 engine that is paired with a five-speed Getrag gearbox.

The left-hand drive car had been owned by three individuals in Germany before arriving on U.K. shores in the mid-1990s where it's lived with its current owner for over 20 years.

The car had its engine rebuilt by Moseley Motorsport in 2010 as well as a front-end respray and a full wheel refurbishment.

The winner of the auction will get a car that is finished in a Macau Blue paint job. It has a rear spoiler, split-rim BBS alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, brake air-intakes, front splitter, and M3 Motorsport Division badges.

Its interior is well preserved. It features the original Buffalo Silver half-leather seats with grey check trim and tricolour 'M' badge, 'M' steering wheel and gear knob, sliding steel sunroof, sunblind for the rear window, upgraded speakers, and the roof-mounted computer that is still labelled in German. The plaque on the centre console shows that this is number 114 of 500 cars made.

For the last eight years, the car has been stored. Its odometer reads 125,620 miles, with just 3,000 miles covered since the engine rebuild in 2010.

The car is accompanied by its original owner's handbook and book pack, stamped service history booklet, two keys, and a number of expired MOT certificates plus some old invoices and bills to confirm the work that has been completed on the car over the years.

It's connected to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

This car's apparently flaw-free appearance hides the rather nasty fact that it has a rebuilt title. A detail-oriented commenter on the auction mentioned finding information on the car's damage, including repairs performed after a collision with a deer and subsequent hair removal. If it's any indication of how valuable a good condition example of this car would be, it was bid to $95,000 with a rebuilt title and still didn't meet the reserve price. While it's a bummer for those hoping their bid would be the one, cars like this do occasionally pop up without deer damage, so it's worth keeping your eyes open.

The Supra finally gets a manual transmission for 2023.

After an almost nonstop chorus of enthusiasts and journalists asking for a manual transmission in the new Supra, Toyota has gone and done it. The car will get an available six-speed manual transmission that will be available on both variants of the GR Supra 3.0, plus a limited-edition model on the U.S. market next year.

The A91-MT Edition Supra will be limited to 500 units, and gets two exterior colors with an exclusive Cognac leather interior. All 2023 Supras come with a 3.0-liter straight-six engine that makes 382 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. Toyota says the six-speed manual has been specially tuned to work with the car's engine, and notes that it modified an existing transmission housing to come up with the design. The gearbox's final drive ratio is shortened to improve response and take-off.

Toyota had to modify the car's interior to accommodate a gearshift lever, so the iDrive controller and other buttons had to be relocated. The automaker says that it focused on the feeling of shifting, from the weight of the knob to the ergonomics and location of the component.

A Supra with a manual gearbox is reason to celebrate, but availability is limited to the top Supra 3.0. The "base" Supra 2.0 won't get the transmission. Toyota says pricing and other information will be available later this year.
