Such a Tease

Kia EV6, company's first dedicated EV, teased ahead of early 2021 debut

Kia has a lot of different vehicles in its lineup - cars, crossovers, a sports car, hybrids, a minivan that doesn't want to be called a minivan, two-row SUVs, PHEVs, and three-row SUVs. All it's really missing is dedicated electric vehicle.

Hyundai gets the Ioniq. Kia gets the EV. It's part of a new naming strategy specifically for Kia's battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that follows a rebranding effort by the company, which has been met with mixed reviews. Kia recently has taken steps to give its products the same name globally. These efforts lead to the Optima, Sedona, and Cadenza names being retired in favor of the K5, Carnival, and K8.

Each vehicle will have a corresponding number, denoting where it fits into the Kia lineup. For example, the EV6 would fit below the EV8 and above the EV4. It's a method similar to how Audi and BMW do business.

The Kia EV6 will be the company's first dedicated electric vehicle and it will be built on the company's Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). That's the same platform that underpins Hyundai's Ioniq lineup.

"EV6 is the embodiment of both our brand purpose, 'Movement that inspires', and our new design philosophy. It has been designed to inspire every journey by offering an instinctive and natural experience that improves the daily lives of our customers, and provide user ownership that is simple, intuitive and integrated," said Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. "Our aim is to design the physical experience of our brand and to create bold, original and inventive electric vehicles."

It's likely, given the images and what we know about the Ioniq 5, that the EV6 two will have a similar crossover-like body style. Certainly the pixelated taillight technology in the Ioniq 5 have come to roost in the EV6. Look for other parts pooling as well. This likely results in the models having the same battery and similar range.

The Kia EV6 will make its world premiere during the first quarter of 2021.

The Acura Integra is coming back in 2022

This is all we know about the new Integra's styling.

Secrets are hard to keep these days. It seems like new products always end up being leaked by one of the hundreds of people involved in the development process, to the point that even the most secretive companies have a hard time unveiling a product that people don't already know about. That wasn't the case this week, though. After announcing the final version of its NSX supercar at Monterey Car Week, Acura took to the skies with an impressive drone show that eventually spelled out a message no one expected to see: The Integra is coming back in 2022.

The original car launched in 1986, and its legend grew over time. After accumulating dozens of awards and spawning an entire industry around customizing and enhancing the Integra, Honda and Acura discontinued the car in 2001. We saw a successor to the crown in the Acura RSX for a few short years afterward, but it's been 15 years since a small, tossable sports car has graced the Acura catalog. Granted, Honda has been on a tear with the Civic Si and Civic Type-R, but there has been a hole in the Acura lineup for some time now.

Waiting is the hardest part, as they say. Other than the gorgeous drone display and tantalizingly mysterious teaser photo, we know nothing, which is a difficult spot to be as a car enthusiast. There are a few details, though. The car will return in 2022 as a "compact premium entrant," according to the press release. Company VP and Acura Brand Officer Jon Ikeda also said that the car is "returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience."

Given parent company Honda's success with performance versions of the Civic, we're optimistic that the 2022 Integra will put its compact dimensions to good use on the road and on the track. We'll have to be patient, though, because official details won't become available until closer to the car's introduction in 2022.
