850-horspower Pagani Huayra R is the brand’s most extreme hypercar ever

The Pagani Huayra R is a track-ready lightweight beast.

Limits, schmimits. The Pagani Huayra R is the most extreme expression of power and performance the boutique automaker has ever put on a track. It begs to be pushed to the limit, giving in exchange the type of wheeled freedom that is terrifyingly delightful.

Pagani says that the Huayra R is the modern embodiment of the Le Mans and World Sports-Prototype Championship cars of the 1960s and 1970s. “Today’s racing cars are focused exclusively on aerodynamics and are largely the product of the wind tunnel. In the 60s and 70s, however, the cars were very fast, certainly dangerous, but beautiful,” said Horacio Pagani, founder of Pagani Automobili S.p.A.

“Prototype sports cars like the Ferrari P4 or the Ford GT40, or the Le Mans cars, had extremely attractive lines, which are still a huge source of inspiration for our cars today. The Porsche 917 is my favourite, with its romantic yet bold shape, which gives the impression of a very fast car. It is beautiful, elegant and timeless. From this desire for freedom, and from the experience of the Zonda R and the cars of the past, came the idea of the Huayra R, like a breath of fresh air.”

The Hauyra R picks up where the Zonda R left off. It incorporates elements of the past, present, and future. And, it’s made to measure, including its engine. The Pagani V12-R, a 6.0-liter 12-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, is the beating heart of the Hauyra R. It was not based on any production model and is the lightest, most powerful and efficient track-ready V12 ever created. Pagani pairs the engine with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The powertrain delivers 850 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

“The new engine had to have the charm, romance, sound and simplicity of the F1 engines of the 1980s, while incorporating state-of-the-art technology available today,” said Pagani.

The monocoque is manufactured using the latest composite technologies developed by the Atelier including Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62. The car’s seats are fully incorporated. The front frame is made of chrome-molybdenum alloy steel. The rear frame has an integrated structure with the powertrain unit. The car has a dry weight of 2314 pounds.

Pagani has designed the car to achieve 2204 pounds of downforce at 199 mph. There are two additional air intakes on the car than what is usual for the Hauyra to aid with cooling. A roof scoop with an integrated center fin has also been added.

The car rides on a forged aluminum alloy, independent double wishbone suspension system that includes helical springs and electronically controlled active shock absorbers.

CCM-R self-ventilated carbon-ceramic disc brakes have been specifically developed for the car and paired with racing brake pads.

Each 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheel is wrapped in a slick version of the P Zero tires that are available in Wet and Dry variants.

In front of the driver are all the car’s essential controls including ABS map selection, radio, and traction control functions. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and can be pulled for access to the cockpit. Paddle shifters are mounted to the steering wheel.

Lights, engine maps, suspension maps, and brake balance sector controls are not he center console. A customizable dashboard gives the driver necessary information while on-board telemetry logs all vehicle data.

The car’s pedals are also adjustable.
