Lexus is expanding its list ES offerings for the 2021 model year. The 2021 Lexus ES 250 AWD becomes the first all-wheel drive (AWD) ES model ever offered. Further, the 2021 Lexus ES 350 Black Line Special edition adds black accents and a unique interior option for buyers.

Designed to give buyers increased confidence in inclement driving conditions, Lexus engineers have simply taken an all-wheel drive system and fitted to the traditional Lexus ES 350. This is the same way all-wheel drive is designed in the ES's sister car, the Toyota Camry. There are no changes to the leg room or cargo space in ES that have AWD compared to those ES models that do.

The system sends torque to all four wheels with up to 50 percent of the engine torque going to the rear. When all-wheel drive capability is not needed, the electromagnetic controlled coupling on the rear drive axle can disengage the propeller shaft to help prioritize fuel efficiency.

All ES 250 AWD models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 203 horsepower achieves 28 mpg combined.

The suspension tuning, wheels, and tires differentiating the ES model grades carry over to the AWD versions. That means, for example, the ES F Sport grade features the same sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch wheels in both front-wheel drive and AWD versions.

A limited number of 2021 Lexus ES 350 Black Line Special Edition sedans will be offered for sale. Based on the F Sport grade, the models will be available in the buyer’s choice of an Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0, Obsidian, or Ultra White exterior. There are black outer mirrors, darkened F Sport wheels and lug nuts, and a black rear lip spoiler.

Each interior has the F SPORT-only two-tone scheme that features white and black coloring with gray stitching.

As with other Black Like Special Edition models in the Lexus lineup, the ES version comes with a two-piece set of Zero Halliburton travel cases that feature several distinctive features, including a chrome logo badge laser etched with "Zero Halliburton for Lexus", a sumptuous interior lining, a Lexus grille motif and a Lexus embossed leather logo badge. The set consists of a 22-inch Continental Carry-on and a 26-inch Medium Travel Case - both black.

The 2021 Lexus ES lineup will arrive at dealerships early this autumn.

The Passport was lightly modified for competition.

Honda

Honda recently announced a line of off-road-oriented trims and packages for its vehicles. Called TrailSport, the trim brings rugged appearance upgrades to the Honda Passport and will eventually offer more performance upgrades for other vehicles in the automaker's catalog. To further prove its mettle in the off-road space, Honda built a 2022 Passport rally truck to compete in the American Rally Association race series. The truck debuted over the weekend in Michigan and had a reasonably successful run for its first time out.

Importantly, the Passport's drivetrain and suspension were left untouched for the rally. The 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6, nine-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and suspension in the rally vehicle are the same components that you or I would see if we bought a new Passport today. Honda did add a transmission fluid cooler, but even then, it's the unit that everyday buyers can get with the available towing package. The SUV's interior was stripped and modified for safety and performance.

Honda did upgrade the Passport's wheels and tires for the event by fitting 17-inch BRAID Winrace T rally wheels and Maxxis RAZR M/T or A/T tires. The automaker also made modifications to the SUV's underside with custom 1/8-inch thick aluminum oil pan and rear differential skid plates. High-density panels protect the fuel tank and other sensitive components, while Carbontech XP12 brake pads and high-temp racing brake fluid slow things down.

The ARA National and Regional Championship Series events feature modified street vehicles that travel at speeds well in excess of 100 mph. The courses include gravel, dirt, mud, and snow, and cover hundreds of miles. The Honda Passport rally vehicle was first driven by two Honda engineers and ran in the top ten out of 42 teams. Honda says that a tire de-bead eventually slowed the team, leading to a delayed finish.

New luxury full-size SUV

All-new 2022 Lexus LX 600 will be here soon

The new LX will go on sale in early 2022.

Lexus

The Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX are among the most revered off-road vehicles of all time. Even so, Toyota is cutting the Land Cruiser in the U.S. after the 2021 model year due to slow sales. We will see its twin, however, as the 2022 Lexus LX was just announced. The full-size SUV will go on sale in the first quarter of 2022 and will bring all two new trims, more intuitive tech, and updated but familiar exterior styling.

2022 Lexus LX The new LX gets a twin-turbo V6 instead of a big V8, and its new platform shaves weight while improving rigidity.Lexus

The 2022 Lexus LX 600 comes in five trims: Standard, Premium, Luxury, F Sport, and Ultra Luxury. The new Ultra Luxury trim cuts the number of seats to four by replacing the rear bench with a pair of plush reclining captain's chairs. A rear entertainment system and large rear center console complete the top-level trim. Also new for 2022 is the LX F Sport, which brings Lexus' sharp appearance package to the LX for the first time. The F Sport gets exclusive 22-inch wheels, aggressive exterior styling, and sport seats with unique color schemes.

The LX is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that produces 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. The body-on-frame SUV rides on an all-new GA-F platform that Lexus says is 20 percent more rigid than that of the previous model. Lexus also carved 441 pounds out of the previous LX's platform weight.

A new Active Height Control (AHC) system and adaptive suspension provide stability and a comfortable ride while retaining the LX's off-road capabilities. AHC allows the driver to select from three ride heights depending on the situation, and a low setting is available for entering and exiting the vehicle. Three wheel sizes are available, and the F Sport trim comes with a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Lexus updated the LX's cabin for 2022 with new infotainment system and a cleaner, more upscale design. A new dual-screen infotainment system is standard. The top 12.3-inch touchscreen handles audio and infotainment duties, while the lower 7.0-inch touchscreen is used for climate controls and related settings. The LX also gets Lexus' new infotainment software, which promises to be more intuitive and simpler than previous systems. Over-the-air updates will bring new features and update existing functionality, while voice controls can command audio, navigation, phone, and other vehicle settings.
