2021 Jaguar F-Pace gets an exterior refresh, electrified engines, major interior upgrade

Jaguar hasn't just tweaked the F-Pace here and there for the 2021 model year. They've substantially upgraded the entire model, from front to back and most everything in between.

The 2021 F-PACE will be offered in four grades: F-PACE 250, S 250, S 340, and R-DYNAMIC S 400. All-wheel drive is standard.

At its face, the new F-Pace features ultra-slim all-LED quad headlights with "Double J Blade" daytime running light signatures. Front and center is an enlarged grille that features the heritage Jaguar logo-inspired diamond detailing. High beam assist is standard. At the rear, slim lights feature Jaguar's double chicane graphic, just as they are on the I-Pace.

A sculpted hood has a reduced number of shut lines and the side vents of the model now feature Jaguar's Leaper emblem. The F-Pace R-Dynamic features distinct elements designed to give the SUV a performance-focused look. Opting for the Black Exterior Pack adds Gloss Black elements.

The 2021 F-Pace will be sold with the buyer's choice of three engines in the U.S. The F-Pace 250 and S 250 get a 246-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The mid-grade S 340 has a 335-horsepower, turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. The F-Pace R-Dynamic S 400 is powered by a 395-horsepower, turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. All gasoline-powered engines are paired with the same eight-speed automatic transmission.

Drivers can choose from Comfort, Eco, Rain-Ice-Snow ,and Dynamic drive modes. The smallest engine gets from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. It takes the F-Pace R-Dynamic just 5.0 seconds to accomplish the same feat.

Jaguar's design team has spent a significant amount of time on the interior of the 2021 F-Pace. It has a new cockpit design that places greater focus on the driver. At the center of the dashboard is an 11.4-inch curved-glass high-definition touch screen that is encased in a magnesium alloy. That screen is three times brighter than the previous 10-inch screen.

The touch screen features Jaguar Land Rover's Pivi Pro operating system (the base model has the older Pivi system). The next-gen system offers improved controls and simplified menus. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is the ability to connect two smartphones to Bluetooth at the same time.

In front of the driver is a newly available 12.3-inch high-definition driver's information screen that features a configurable layout that includes full-screen navigation with turn-by-turn directions, digital dials, and infotainment details. A head-up display is also available.

The car's dual-modem setup allows for connectivity by the car without compromising the performance of personal device connectivity.

The center console blends with the instrument panel and incorporates a wireless charger. An LED light strip spans the front of the cabin and features 10 color options.

Jaguar has given the SUV a long list of standard features that includes heated seats, keyless entry, a 14-speaker Meridian sound system with Sirius XM. Buyers can opt to add on the Activity Key, which can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle without the need for the conventional key fob to be present in the vehicle. Air ionization is also available.

The cabin is finished in authentic materials including open-pore wood veneers and aluminum. Attention has been paid to the shape of forms in the cabin to make them more elegant and sophisticated. Laser-etched mid-line speaker frets, the metallic rotary dial of the JaguarDrive Control, and cricket ball stitching on the Drive Selector enhance the sensory experience.

Soft-touch materials have been used more extensively in the 2021 model with the instrument panel topper, door armrests, console sides and door bins all wrapped for increased tactility.

Jaguar has redesigned the F-Pace's seats to feature wider cushioning, massage functionality, and enhanced heating and cooling areas. The Jaguar Leaper is embossed on all occupant headrests on selected models, and a set of 'Est.1935 Jaguar Coventry' upholstery tags that highlight the brand's heritage.

To improve the ride experience, Jaguar has integrated the brand's new Active Road Noise Cancellation technology into the cabin, which helps to keep road and engine noise at bay.

Buyers who opt for the F-Pace R-Dynamic model will get a sportier interior specification that includes sports seats upholstered in Mars Red, Siena Tan, Ebony or Light Oyster as well as an Ebony headliner and steering wheel. "R" badging is on display throughout the cabin. There are also aluminum finishes throughout the cabin.

The car comes standard with and has available a number of safety and driver assist technologies including Clear Exit Monitor, which warns occupants of an approaching car or cyclist as they exit the vehicle. All F-Pace models get blind spot assist, rear traffic monitor, and a 3D surround camera.

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace will go on sale later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to its on-sale date.

The IIHS may increase the speeds it uses to test advanced driver aids.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently announced that it is considering changing the speeds it uses to test vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention systems. The agency currently tests the systems at 12 and 25 mph, but says that the speeds don't accurately represent the types of crashes the safety tech is meant to prevent.

Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is designed to notify of a possible collision and help respond with automatic application of braking. Just like a human using the brake pedal, it can stop the car, but higher speeds make it difficult to stop in time. The new tests would be conducted at 35 to 45 mph, which is the range where a large number of rear-end crashes occur. As Automotive News noted, an IIHS study showed 43 percent of rear-end crashes occur at speeds of 45 mph or less, so it's important to have a test that shows how well the tech performs at those levels.

A whopping 85 percent of 2022 vehicles earned a "Superior" rating in the current testing regime, so the IIHS will remove it from 2023 testing and Top Safety Pick award evaluations. Their view is that, since the majority of vehicles meet the criteria, it's no longer an accurate way of evaluating performance. In its place, the agency introduced a night test for automatic emergency braking systems that will begin next year.

The majority of new car buyers paid a markup in January 2022.

It's no secret that new car prices are climbing every year, as new technology and features make their way into even the most basic models. The issue is compounded by massive supply chain issues that have caused vehicle shortages for nearly every major automaker. Some dealers are taking advantage of record low inventory levels by marking up prices, and unfortunately, the problem isn't limited to a handful of bad apples. In analyzing recent sale price data, automotive publication Edmunds found that buyers paid a markup in a whopping 82.2 percent of all new vehicle purchases in January 2022, compared to just 2.8 percent a year before. Overall, the average transaction price rose to $728 above MSRP for new car purchases.

Cadillac buyers saw the largest markups, to the tune of $4,048 on average in January. Land Rover and Kia weren't much better, with average markups of $2,565 and $2,289, respectively. On the other end of the spectrum, Alfa Romeo buyers got discounts that averaged $3,421, while people who bought Volvo or Lincoln vehicles got smaller discounts of $869 and $510, respectively.

Some automakers have taken a stand against dealer markups and the general lack of transparency seen in pricing across the board. Ford and General Motors have been vocal in recent months, threatening to withhold inventory from dealers found to be slapping markups on new vehicles. As Edmunds notes, both automakers have important vehicle launches on the horizon that neither can afford to flub, and inconsistent pricing or markups is a good way to alienate new customers out of the gate.

If you're thinking of shopping for a new car, the best way to avoid paying a markup is to wait. The pandemic and ongoing supply chain issues have thrown kinks into every automaker's operations that will take time to iron out. That said, it's clear that some brands are committed to having no funny business when it comes to dealerships' pricing and communication. It's possible to get a vehicle at MSRP, or even below in some cases, so if you're in a position that requires you to buy a new car, shop around to get the best deal.
