The new Genesis G80 showcases fresh personality and some questionable-looking 20-inch wheels.

It looks like the Genesis G80 is finally getting some swagger. The Korean automaker showed off images online of the forthcoming redesign of the midsize sedan this week showcasing its “athletic elegance” design features and fresh styling.

The 2021 Genesis G80 will be fresh from the ground up. Like the G90, this is a complete redesign of the model despite its short initial, first-generation run. It shares many of the design features of the Genesis G90, the company’s flagship sedan that underwent a similar overhaul for this new model year.

“The Genesis design DNA begins from the logo itself,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President, Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group. “The crest of the logo becomes the Crest Grille and the two lines of the wings become the Quadlamps. In other words, the design starts with the brand, and design is the brand.”

At the front of the model is the aforementioned Crest Grille with two lines of Quadlamps running from the front to side of the vehicle. This style look debuted on the GV80, the new Genesis two-row SUV.

It rides on a rear-wheel drive platform and has a fastback-like roofline. The side panels have a long, sweeping line from front to rear that was designed to evoke the elegance of classic cars. To counterbalance the horizontal movement, vertical chrome was placed on the vehicle while 20-inch wheels ground the model.

Quadlamps make a second appearance at the rear. The trunk release button and surrounding chrome mimics the shape of the Genesis logo.

“Inside, the Beauty of White Space’ theme represents our journey to achieve the perfect balance between personal space and state-of-the-art technology.” said Sang Yup Lee. “We question the status quo. Technology should not dominate and only present itself when necessary. This is the new luxury experience our Genesis customers expect in today’s high-end user experience.”

The dashboard is home to a 14.5-inch infotainment screen. There are skinny vents stretching the width of the cabin.

Genesis designers took care to reduce the thickness of the car’s A-pillars to allow for more greenhouse and a panoramic-like view out the front.

The new design is accompanied by fresh powertrains and advanced driver assistance systems. We’ll know more later in the month when the model officially debuts.
