First 2020 Chevrolet Corvette (finally) rolls off the assembly line in Kentucky

The first Corvette C8 rolled off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky this morning.

It was supposed to happen last year. Finally, the first 2020 Chevrolet Corvette has rolled off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, marking the official beginning of the C8 generation. Production had been held up due to union labor negotiations.

The transition off the line marks the beginning of regular production. Models produced before today are considered pre-production.

The model that came off the line first is the one purchased at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January by NASCAR team owner and multi-franchise car dealer Rick Hendrick for $3 million. Proceeds from the sale benefited the Detroit Children's

All models now in production are the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the first 'Vette introduced as part of the new generation. It's a mid-engine model with design lines reminiscent of a fighter jet- something that Corvette designers have long held into focus.

Powered by a 6.2-liter V8, the 2020 Corvette Stingray produces 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque when equipped with the available performance exhaust. This makes the new Corvette Stingray the most powerful entry level Corvette to date and as quick as a Ferrari 488 GTB.

Late last year AutomotiveMap's Sue Mead was among the first journalists in the nation to test drive the model.

Initial vehicle shipments to dealers are expected to begin in late February or early March. The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette starts just under $60,000 without destination and delivery factored in.

The Chevrolet Silverado will be offered with a new, multi-way tailgate for the 2021 model year.

Buyers love the GMC Sierra’s MultiPro Tailgate so it was only a matter of time before General Motors brought it over to the Chevrolet Silverado. That time has arrived.

Chevy will introduce the six-way tailgate on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado at the end of the year. Instead of being known as the MultiPro Tailgate, the feature will be rebranded and called the Multi-Flex Tailgate. Yes, with the hyphen and everything.

The Chevrolet version of the tailgate really isn’t much different than the GMC version. The biggest difference is that it wears bow tie badging.

It’s functionality includes:

  • Primary gate — opens from the key fob, from inside the truck or via a button on the gate.
  • Primary gate load stop — helps prevent items from sliding out of the box.
  • Easy access — the inner gate folds down, allowing a deeper reach into the box.
  • Full-width step — the inner gate folds into a large step for easy access and holds up to 375 pounds.
  • Inner gate load stop — helps prevent second-tier items from sliding out of the box.
  • Inner gate with work surface — when opened, provides a work surface as well as second-tier loading.
It is likely that the Multi-Flex Tailgate will cost a premium when it arrives on dealer lots and it probably won’t be available on all Silverado models. In the video above, Chevrolet shows the tailgate on the Silverado High Country, its highest trim level.
In addition to the tailgate news, Chevrolet has already revealed that it will offer a Realtree Edition of the Silverado 1500 for the 2021 model year. It will feature familiar features and appointments that exemplify the Realtree brand.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado is slated to go on sale later this year.

The Honda-GM agreement will allow for collaboration on a number of fronts.

On the heels of successful collaboration regarding the implementation of electric vehicle technologies, General Motors and Honda have announced the signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding that will increase the level of partnership between the two companies.

This isn't the first time that Honda and GM are collaborating. They have been working together on a variety of projects for over 20 years, including the Cruise Origin.

"This alliance will help both companies accelerate investment in future mobility innovation by freeing up additional resources. Given our strong track record of collaboration, the companies would realize significant synergies in the development of today's vehicle portfolio," said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors.

The agreement is seen as a step toward creating a North American automotive alliance in a vein similar vein to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. In that alliance, the three companies share a portion of the development, engineering, and production costs of vehicles and future technology. The scope of the proposed alliance includes vehicles that will be sold under each company's distinct brands as well as cooperation in purchasing, research and development, and connected services.

This proposed alliance would allow Honda and GM to collaborate on a variety of segments in North America that would share vehicle platforms and electrified and internal combustion propulsion systems. This could mean that we see a full-size Honda truck or a Chevrolet car with a Civic engine in the future.

Additionally, the alliance would allow for better market positioning for materials purchasing negotiations, logistics, and localization strategies.

"Through this new alliance with GM, we can achieve substantial cost efficiencies in North America that will enable us to invest in future mobility technology, while maintaining our own distinct and competitive product offerings. Combining the strengths of each company, and by carefully determining what we will do on our own and what we will do in collaboration, we will strive to build a win-win relationship to create new value for our customers. In this way, Honda will continue making steady progress in solidifying our existing business by realizing strong products, strong manufacturing capability and a strong business structure," said Seiji Kuraishi, executive vice president of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

Co-development planning discussions will begin immediately, with engineering work beginning in early 2021.

The agreement builds on the electric vehicle platform sharing agreement the two automakers signed in April. In that agreement, Honda will work with GM to develop two new electric vehicles based on GM's global EV platform powered by Ultium batteries.

GM is already part of the Materials Marketplace, an initiative of the United States Business Council for Sustainable Development that works to identify ways to reuse or exchange undervalued materials through an online database and establish circular supply chains. This is designed to lengthen product life cycles and lower the environmental impact of many stages of the manufacturing and design process.
